Chapter Twenty-One
Weâd arrived during rush hour. The teleporting room was crammed full of witches and warlocks who were heading home. Dominic forged his way through the crowd since he was a lot bigger than I was. Jess did her best to stay behind me, but she occasionally brushed up against the living and they shivered at her spectral coolness.
Emerging into the hallway, we moved away from the crowd and I called Toby Jenkins. âThis is a nice surprise,â he said when he answered.
âAre you still at work?â I asked.
âI was just about to leave, but Iâm still in my office. Is there something I can do for you?â
âI need you to help me identify someone. Can my client and I come and visit you?â
âOf course. When will you arrive?â
âWeâre already here. Weâll head to your office now.â
âIâll have coffee and snacks ready,â he said, picking up on my serious tone.
âWho are we meeting with?â Dominic asked.
âHis name is Toby Jenkins.â
His eyes widened in surprise. âIsnât he the warlock who helped you take down the former Council leaders?â
âThatâs him,â I confirmed as I led the way to Tobyâs office.
âDoes he really wear garish suits instead of the usual black and white uniform?â Dominic asked in a low voice.
âYouâll see for yourself in a minute,â I said with a small smirk.
âYour ghostly friend would probably get along well with Mr. Jenkins,â Dominic mused. âHer outfit is pretty memorable.â
Jess gave an indignant squawk and a couple of ghosts who were drifting past us snickered. They knew who we were and word would undoubtedly spread that weâd come to pay Toby a visit.
âShe died in the eighties,â I explained.
âI could tell by her crimped hair and electric blue eyeshadow,â Dominic said. He dredged up a grin, but it vanished almost immediately.
When we reached Tobyâs office, I knocked and he called out for us to enter. Dominic did a double take when he saw Tobyâs outfit of choice. He was wearing a purple suit, a yellow shirt and an orange tie. âToby Jenkins, this is Dominic Romney,â I said in introduction. Toby was a big fan of color and several gaudy paintings hung on the walls. His desk was fairly plain, but he had several shelves on the wall behind it. A variety of toys and figurines stood on the shelves. Most seemed to be from movies and computer games. A bookshelf took up the wall to the left. It was filled with sci-fi books and comics.
The pair shook hands and Toby closed the door, correctly assuming we wanted privacy. A tray with a coffeepot, a teapot, three mugs and cream and sugar sat on his desk along with a plate of cookies. âIâd say Iâm delighted to meet you, but I sense something tragic has occurred,â Toby said to my client. Somewhere in his thirties, he was chubby and had receding brown hair. His accent was British, but it wasnât as posh as Haydnâs.
âIâd kill for some coffee,â I said and headed for his guest chairs.
